In a meeting at the Muğla Governor's Office over the weekend, it was decided that the Blue Chip monitoring system would be implemented as soon as possible.
Officials from Special Environmental Protection Agency and The Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association, or TURMEPA, attended the meeting. TURMEPA General Manager Levent Ballar said he was happy with the decision.
The Turkish Marine Environment Protection Association, or TURMEPA, was about to abandon its protection work around Fethiye because of bureaucratic turmoil and non-compliance with regulations. Even though it was proposed by Muğla Provincial Department of Environment Director Mehmet Şahin, the Blue Chip Card system was postponed by a decision made on March 19.
The Blue Chip Card system is unique in that it features a recorder both on shore and onboard registered vessels. The card transfers all the information to the computer and then to the main system so the amount of water taken by the boat can be accurately determined. If it has taken two tons of water, it has to pour out the same amount at the treatment facility.
TURMEPA, which is also the technological subcontractor for Blue Chip Cards for the next two years, bought software for the system for 200,000 Turkish Liras and prepared 5,000 cards that are linked to computer systems at 15 marinas in Muğla.
